MESA, Ariz.—Banner Desert Medical Center opened The Oasis Spa in May, blending the healing effects of medicine with the stress-reducing environment of a spa. Formerly a hospice, the fourth floor of the Traditional Care Building was converted to be a haven for total body wellness. “To me, the essence of this is stress release—the whole healing environment,” says Janice Hein, spa supervisor. “We hope The Oasis Spa will serve as a model for other hospitals.” True to its roots, the facility received a blessing from a Native American medicine man before renovation began. Further, Native hot stones create a decorative theme and also are used in facials and foot/hand massages. Art was donated by the Scottsdale Artists League. The Oasis Spa offers a range of traditional treatments such as facials, body wraps, microdermabrasion and aromatherapeutic services. All menu items are noninvasive, so there are no physicians on staff. PhotoActif provides a machine for services including its new cellulite treatment, Photomesotherapy™.Among the unique offerings is Sign Chi Do™,a therapeutic exercise developed by Dr. Anne Borik combining sign language, breathing and movement. In an effort to reach out to the hospital community, most of the spa’s equipment is mobile, enabling staff to take services to anyone in the complex who wants or needs the healing touch of spa.
