Metamorphosis Day Spa
Transition Into Tranquility

 by Wendy Craft

Positioned on 56th Street between Midtown and the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Metamorphosis Day Spa provides the perfect transition away from the bustle of the city that never sleeps. Owner and spa director Cleo Londono opened the 1,800-square-foot facility October 1997 and has succeeded offering locals and travelers alike a transition into tranquility.

The spa offers guests a pleasant decor and six spacious treatment rooms—all down to earth with no gimmicks, Londono says. Colors are done in sage, green and beige. Fresh flowers are kept in all of the rooms, including the waiting and front-desk areas.

Londono describes the spa as fresh and clean. It undergoes a deep cleaning twice a week, and housekeeping is kept up daily. Londono also takes a hands-on approach to keeping the spa in order. “If I see something dirty, I am on my knees and cleaning,” she says.

The staff of 18 at Metamorphosis includes a mixture of estheticians, massage therapists, laser technicians, front-desk attendants, and maintenance and housekeeping personnel. “Everyone who works here and does treatments love what they do,” she says. Depending on which types of treatments, massages or services a client may request, Londono has a staff that can accommodate an individual’s needs. “It’s to make the experience better for the client,” she says.

Metamorphosis Day Spa guests are greeted at the front desk by spa staff. They receive professional treatments and good prices compared to other facilities in the area, she says. Guests include young professionals and people who work and live in the commercial and residential neighborhood that surrounds the day spa. Most clients spend an average of two hours at the spa.

Visitors hail from as far away as Massachusetts, Connecticut, California and New Jersey.

Offerings

Spa guests can choose from services including facials, massages, hair removal, body treatments, Endermologie® and airbrush tanning, as well as “Just For Him” treatments and services geared for male clientele.

Ocean Potion, a hydrating seaweed mask, and Lip Therapy, which gives clients’ lips a plumping effect, are two examples of treatments on the Finishing Touches menu. These specialized treatments can be mixed, matched and added to facial treatments.

Endermologie, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal and CoolTouch® facial-rejuvenation treatments are a few favorites of spa guests. CoolTouch is a YAG laser used to treat wrinkles, acne and acne scars, Londono says; treatments that incorporate the device start at $200. Other equipment used at the spa include LPG® and Candela.

“We have a lot of options, in terms of peelings and extra treatments,” Londono says. For example, treatments that feature pumpkin products are available in the fall. Holiday treatments include the spa’s European facial, which incorporates holidayscented products such as a cranberry peel.

Chocolate and chocolate-scented products are on the menu in February, and scented massage oils such as chocolate cake, chocolate peppermint and chocolate raspberry are used. Some of the “Valentine Delights” packages include the Couples’ Massage ($180), featuring a candle-lit massage room for two, roses, wine or hot cocoa, and chocolates.

The Package For Her ($275) consists of several treatments including the Frutopia facial with Revitalizing chocolate mask and a Chocolate Thin- Mint pedicure. The Package For Him ($195) includes a Clear and Clean facial and a Peppermint Head Trip (scalp and head massage) in addition to other treatments.

A Chocolate-Raspberry Body Scrub ($65) and Chocolate Hand & Foot Paraffin Treatment ($30) also are on the menu around Valentine’s Day.

Signature Treatments

The Metamorphosis Body Package (120 minutes, $180) consists of exfoliation with an alpha-hydroxy acid, micro-sized marble tri-scrub, and a milk, honey and essential oil body wrap—with the essential oil of the client’s choice. The client then is wrapped for about 25 minutes, while having a scalp and foot massage. Following the wrap, the client receives a one-hour therapeutic massage.

The Metamorphosis Facial Package (90 minutes, $150) always is customized with certain skin products depending on a client’s needs. The facial includes a mild enzyme peel, steam, facial massage and extraction. A high-frequency light device then applied to the skin to kill bacteria. A customized mask is applied followed by an ampoule to penetrate into the skin. A second massage follows—which can be a lymphatic draining or pressure point, depending on skin needs. The facial finishes with an eye treatment, seaweed mask and scalp massage.

If a warmer glow is what a spa guest seeks, the spa offers sunless and airbrush treatments. The Sunscape treatment (45 minutes, $85) begins with a sugar body scrub to remove dead skin cells. A shower is followed by a massage with self-tanning lotion.

Sunmist® airbrush tanning ($65-$95) was incorporated within the last three years. “It’s very popular,” Londono says. “In the summer, we sometimes were doing five a day.” Sunmist features Biddiscombe Laboratories solutions for bronzing and Keyanno products without bronzing.

Exclusive Products, Packages

Metamorphosis Day Spa products were designed in part by all of the estheticians as well as Londono, following intensive research and testing.

“We exclusively use Emerge Labs, which is a skincare line developed only for Metamorphosis Day Spa,” she says. “Our line is very clinical.” The Emerge skincare line includes anti-aging products, cleansers, lighteners, toners, items designed for men’s skincare needs, and other products.

It is not only the products used at Metamorphosis that make it unique. Londono also has arranged a treatment menu designed around the needs of young people.

“Parents can bring the kids to a spa without having to pay the big spa prices,” Londono says. “It’s a lot of fun.”

The Candy Land package (120 minutes, $140) is for girls only, ages 9 to 12. The treatment includes a “cotton candy” mini facial, a massage with “vanilla milkshake” cream and a “strawberry” manicure and “bubble gum” pedicure. Girls also are given a free goodie bag of sweets.

The Teen Dream package (150 minutes, $195) is for kids ages 12 to 16. A Beautifying Floral facial is followed by a Mint-Citric waxing treatment, a half-hour massage with “pink rose” cream, a “mango” manicure and “peachy keen” pedicure.

Children ages 12 to 16 also can choose the Zit Zapper package (60 minutes, $145). The facial consists of an exfoliation treatment and three full-sized anti-acne products with consultation on how to use them.

Metamorphosis designs treatments and services around the needs of all clients—whether they are young adults with acne-prone skin, couples seeking a romantic massage over the holidays, or a soon-to-be traveler wanting color from a sunless treatment.

A helpful and caring staff who perform seasonal spa treatments with exclusive products in a fresh, clean environment lend to the comfortable and relaxing feeling Londono hopes all spa guests can take with them. A stop at Metamorphosis Day Spa may provide the perfect transition away from the bustle of the city that never sleeps.
