Confessions Of A Holiday Junkie

THERE IS NO getting around the fact that I’m a holiday junkie. Ask anyone who knows me and they will agree that when the colder months blow into Phoenix, I start getting the holiday itch. For most Americans, the day after Thanksgiving means lounging on the couch or fighting the crowds at the shopping malls. In my world, the day after Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the neighborhood holiday decoration war. In fact, when I married my husband nearly five years ago, he said we had enough lights to land Air Force One on our block and steadfastly vetoed the idea of lighted, animated deer in our yard. I took this as a challenge. Needless to say, we welcomed three deer to our holiday fold last year and I didn’t have to sacrifice one string of lights.

The point of this letter is this: The holidays seem to put nearly everyone in a joyful spirit—especially retailers. According to the National Retail Federation, the holiday season is responsible for nearly 23 percent of retail sales for the year. This month’s cover story examines ways for savvy spa owners and managers to capture some of the season’s silver and gold by offering fun holiday promotions. Additionally, our Holiday Gift Guide provides a compilation of holiday-themed products and promotions that can add end-of-the-year revenues.

Shifting gears, this month we profile Seedlings Salon in Doylestown, Pa. The spa opened in August and is one of the first facilities in the nation catering specifically to children and young adults. Please turn to page 46 to learn more about owners Karen Lafferty and Geri Rycharski and their vision for the future.

Across the country in the Pacific Northwest, Mimi’s Sun Spa owners David and Mimi Rosenberg are introducing clients to the ultimate experience: to relax, restore and rejuvenate. Turn to page 48 to find out how this Port Townsend, Wash., spa is attracting locals and tourists from the United States and Canada.
